Birth Photography to Celebrate Bringing New Life into the World

The birth of a child is an extraordinary moment in one’s life. It’s a time when you give all of your strength, power and determination to bring a baby earthside. Nothing can prepare you for this unique experience, it’s an emotional time filled with love, sweat, blood and tears, but you can document this very special journey with a birth photography session.

At Moonbeam and Tree, we provide birth photography sessions that record this monumental moment in life. We capture that expression of love and overwhelming joy when you finally get to hold your baby for the first time. With a birth photography session, you are left with a tangible memory of one of the most joyous occasions of life.

Why book birth photography?

In the moment of birth, the last thing on your mind is to start taking pictures; all of your attention and power is geared towards bringing a new life into this world. The people around you are also there to support you, encouraging you to push through and reassuring you that you have got this!

A lot is going on during birth, from the midwives checking in, to the doctors who are administering pain relief and all of the friends and family who are visiting - so much is happening that it all flies by in an instant.

When we look back at our birthing journey, it can be a little hazy and difficult to recall all of the details. Not to mention that pain relief can often leave mothers a little disorientated and out of sorts; you aren't taking everything in because your attention is directed at the enormous job at hand of giving birth.

That’s where I come in.

As a birth photographer, I am working behind the scenes to document this joyous occasion whilst you are doing the hardest job of all. I am to make myself invisible in order to capture those authentic moments of delighted expressions and glimpses of relief.

With birth photography, we aim to create candid images that detail the whole birthing journey illustrating a story that will be told for years to come. In the midst of it all, I capture those moments of reassurance and support between you and your birthing partner, reminding you of the special bond you shared at this extraordinary time.

Birth photography is unique to your journey, it also creates a gift that you can pass on to your child when they get older. How many people can say they have an image of themselves when they were just seconds old or when they first opened their eyes?

What to consider before booking a birth photographer?

If you are opting for a birth photography shoot, there is a lot to consider beforehand. It’s an important decision as you want the process to go as smoothly as possible whilst still capturing those special moments of birth.

Check out these tips for what to consider before you book a birth photographer.

The birth photographer

The birth photographer will be present in one of the most intimate moments of your life, so it’s important that you are the right fit for each other and comfortable in one another’s presence.

It is vital that you meet with your birth photographer beforehand in order to develop a rapport and discuss what you want from the birth photography session. This is also an opportunity for the photographer to explain the process to you and answer any questions you may have.

The style of the birth photos

You should also consider what style you would like to have your birth photography images captured in. Options can include black and white, colour images, candid shots and specific poses. The decision is yours as it is a bespoke photography session like no other.

It’s also worth mentioning those specific moments that you would like to be photographed, whether it’s the time spent in active labour, the first time the father holds the baby or an image of the baby and the joining umbilical cord. These are very special moments in the birthing journey and are most definitely worth capturing.

Take a look at previous birth photography images for some inspiration.

The birthing plan

You should also consider what your birthing plan is going to look like and how you want that to be illustrated. Share your birth plan with your selected photographer and ensure they know the details of what to expect.

What happens during birth photography?

At Moonbeam and Tree, a birth photography session is the most important date in the diary. We will never book two births at the same time as we need to be ready and flexible when the baby decides to come.

We are on call 24/7 for 3 weeks surrounding your expected delivery date. No matter what time you're in active labour, we will make it a top priority to be there within 90 minutes and start capturing the beautiful journey of you giving birth.

We will stay with you during the active labour and for one-hour post birth, giving you the space and privacy to relish in this joyous occasion. 24 hours after the initial birth, we will provide you with a birth announcement image, ensuring that you can spread the good news and introduce your latest addition to those near and dear to you.

We will edit and produce a birth story within 3 weeks of the birth. Creating a truly unique story that will become a treasured and tangible memory of one of the most important days of your life. It’s also a great time to reminisce about the birth journey once you are settled and nestled into life with your new baby in the outside world.
